Booking Through Thursday - Windfall

Yesterday, April 15th, was Tax Day here in the U.S., which means lots of lucky people will get refunds of over-paid taxes.

Whether you’re one of them or not, what would you spend an unexpected windfall on? Say … $50? How about $500?

(And, this is a reading meme, so by rights the answer should be book-related, but hey, feel free to go wild and splurge on anything you like.)

Well, although I don't live in the USA and we don't have taxes here in my country I was reluctant to answer this weeks question.. But I though I would consider that somehow I got a refund for something I bought and got back $50 or $500 and what I would do with the money..

Well if I got $50 I'll go get me some books from Amazon or ebooks from Fictionwise :) can't have that TBR losing weight :)

If I got $500 than that is a completly different issue.. I would go get me a Netbook with 3G access :) so I could easily blog anywhere I go.. the smaller the Netbook te better with the most capacity possible ;)

That's it for me, what about you?? What would you do if you got back $50 or $500??

If you would like to check what others have to say.. check here ..

Fantastic ideas -- I would love to be able to blog wherever I go.

I'm with you books and I'd probably need a new book case since mine are full.

There is a blog award waiting for you @ http://alainereading.blogspot.com/2009/04/blog-awards.html

You're the second person to mention Fictionwise, and now I'll have to check it out and see what's up.

Is it even possible for the Mt. TBR to lose weight? I managed to clear a hole last month, and promptly filled it with 3 or 4 times as much as went out!

Buying a Netbook is a great idea!

let the windfall fall on my head

I've never heard of Fictionwise before. I'll have to look it up.

I like the idea about getting the Netbook - have you researched these - what one would you get?

I love Fictionwise - that is my favorite place to get ebooks.

Great way to spend the money!!!

1. BlackBerry.
2. eBook Reader.

You're such a bookworm! Girls should read like you. Voraciously! Some of my nieces read just a wee bit and watch Telly a LOT.

We're still feeling a little queasy about the economy and finances. Our tax returns are going to build safety cushion and pay debt. Sexy stuff, huh? Guess I'm off to the library until we feel more sorted out.

This is almost like the discussion of "what would you do if you win the lottery"! $50 I would take to the bookstore, for sure. I did think that I would use the $500 to fund a weekend getaway with my family, but now that you bring it up, I'd really like a laptop!!!

No such thing as a tax refund in our household, but if we did come into some crazy money, I'd maybe get a Kindle2. That's the only way I could justify the cha-ching that thing costs. The books are cheaper and it saves space, but dadgum the cost the bucks!

ROTFL..."can't have that TBR losing weight". too funny : }.

Oh, I am craving the netbook, too.

I may break!!!

More books and of course more bookshelves to hold them.

Jess, I know it's very tempting.. even if you are in public transportation or in the office, before the boss shows up ;)

Alaine, who doesn't seem to need a new book case.. the way I'm buying books I'm afraid to be buried beneath them one day :)
Thanks for the award, it was so sweet of you to think of me.. you made my day twice today.. once with the hunky tag and now this.. I appreciate it :)

thekoolaidmom, Fictionwise is really great for buying ebooks :)
I know Mt. TBR never seems to lose weight.. I read one book and add a dozen either virtually, physically or as an ebook!

gautami tripathy, yes I think it would be real fun having it with you all the time..

Melissa, if you don't usually buy ebooks then most probably you won't hear of it.. since it's basically for buying ebooks plus it has a lending library to borrow ebooks online :) .. you have to subscribe for this feature but I loved the idea since I don't have a public library in my city, so I tried it out and it was pretty cool!

Kara, actually I'm in the process of researching them.. I've checked some at the local store next to my house and saw what they looked like, but couldn't decide on one.. the one I liked was already out of stock.. I wanted to get a Dell but it only has 16GB SSD, I wanted more space.. but the main thing that's stopping me is that all of them run on Windows XP and I'm used to Vista now and don't want to go back to XP.. preferably something newer would be even better! So I'm kinda waiting till August or September and hoping to find what I really want by then :)
Great to know that you are enjoying ebooks too.. any other sites you know about? I tried Champagne books too..

Maqsood, actually I don't have a Blackberry I have an IPhone :) and yes I am a bookworm and love gadgets too :) even considering a Kindle 2 :)
I love watching TV but not as much as blogging and reading :)

TexasRed, I agree that the library is the safest place to go :) lucky you have one.. I don't have one in my city :(

Sandy, see I'm a bad influence ;) your family will hate me :)
Actually I would consider a getaway if it was to GET AWAY from my kids.. just to lay down, RELAX, read and have some peace and quiet for a change :)

Vickie, I know the Kindle 2 is quite highly priced, check out the giveaway that I posted on my side bar.. you just might get it for free, and it would be your lucky day :)
The ebook idea is really great in saving space, I mean if I have my ebooks as physical books, I'd be buried under book rubble :)

The Book Resort, glad to put a smile on your face :) but it's true.. it just would not budge.. keeps gaining weight too ;)
The Netbook will be my goal this year.. I might try to put some money aside just specially for it :)

Robin, good for you.. bookshelves are a must :)

The Book Resort, so your Netbook is hearing your call.. if you do get one do tell me what brand you got..

Blodeuedd, I guess all us bookworms would enjoy a Kindle 2 :) and the Netbook idea seems mutual with most of us :)

Well...I filed an extension...so hopefully when I get my act together, I will get a refund. If I do I will buy dogfood if it is a small amount. If it is a large amount I will buy a couple or more (probably more) books. Then use it to replace one sliding door on my house.

I have to be optimistic :)

Wisteria, optimism is great.. and I do hope you get more back so you can get some more books :)

Sharon said...

ooooohhhh....what is a Netbook?? I've been giving a Kindle some serious thought. Now I have to go see what this Netbook with 3G access is! I don't know what 3G is either, but I think I want it...:)

Sharon said...

Oh..to answer the question. With 450 I would go to the bookstore! Or half.com. With $500, at this point, I would buy a new back door and pay someone to install it!

That makes you an official blogger-addicted.

To answer your question, I actually got +500 in my tax return and used part of it to pay for massages for my best friend and me, some other little stuff that I don't remember and a Sony Reader, I got 100 free books with the Reader and ordered it from Sony so free shipping and engraving. Sorry to use your blog to brag (well not really). I will have to check out that e-book site and see if it is compatible.

Desert Rose said...

Sharon, a netbook is a smaller version of a laptop usually from 8 inches to 10 or 11 inches.. it's small and compact specifically for net users because it doesn't have much memory like the original laptops do but it has a good battery life.. and 3G (3rd Generation) gives you fast access to the Internet and email over cellular networks around the world. I've tried it with my IPhone and it's great :)
It seems everyone with 50 bucks will go running to the nearest bookstore :)

Smilingsal, I know!! It's so addicting what can I do, it just crept up on me without feeling it :) but it's so fun!!

Bella, I always love to stop by your blog :)
WOW you ARE lucky :) I'm really glad you got the Sony reader.. I love mine :) so brag all you want ;) Which did you get, the 505 or the 700?
Fictionwise has the lrf format for a lot of books the others you can download as lit and read through Misrosoft Reader..but the secure format needs a handheld or IPhone, I downloaded them on it and it's working perfectly..they also have some free books you can download.. most formats can be converted to the Sony format through different converters.. there is eve a free converter online to do that.. if you want the link I could post it for you, My dear Sony buddy ;)

Bella Foxx said...

Hey DeSeRt RoSe: I got the 505 and had it engraved with 'Bella is reading' naturally!

I checked out Fictionwise and it says their books are compatible with the Sony Reader.

Even cooler, I was giving a speech, and was able to load my notes into the reader, made it much easier!

Desert Rose said...

Bella, Good for you!! I've heard the 700 has some issues :) and comparing the 505 with the 700 they say the 505 is better.. so I'm totally happy with my 505 :)
I wanted to engrave mine but I couldn't buy it through Sony's site and had to get it through ebay.. fictionwise is great :)

I loved the idea of having your notes on the reader, never thought of it.. but it's so cool to have your gadgets adapt to your needs!! You should tell Sony about that to add to their ad :)
