The Raising by Laura Kasischke

The Raising by Laura Kasischke

Year Pubished: 2011

My Rating: 5 stars

496 pages

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful book!

Craig has been roomed with Perry who comes from a town called Bad Axe. Nicole comes from Bad Axe too and has known Perry all her life, in kindergarten, school and in study groups.

So when Nicole turns up at their door looking for Perry to start a study group, Craig is smitten.
They start to date and Craig is just crazy about her. What he is not crazy about is the sorority she is a part of. But he tries to understand just to keep her happy. There is absolutely nothing Craig won't do for her.

Then tragedy strikes when they end up in a car accident, and Nicole dies. He is devastated and can't even remember what really happened that night. Even after so many counseling sessions. The police don't blame him but Nicole's sorority sisters do.
He is trying to live through his grief and trying to shake the guilt that is consuming him.

Now other people on the campus start seeing Nicole and another dead girl. Are they seeing ghosts or are they hallucinating??

Professor Polsen teaches a class about Death, Dying and the Undead, so she teams up with Perry to write a book about these sightings and other weird things happening.

But things just seem to get complicated for everyone, and everything doesn't seem what it is. So what is really happening??

At the first when I started reading this book, I was confused that it kept going back and forth between characters and the two time periods (Before and After Nicole's death). I felt that the characters where just too much. But that was my initial feeling for the book and I was considering stopping in the beginning..

Then the action started, and I just couldn't put it down. It was AMAZING!!! And the characters where just perfect. Craig was a jerk up until he met Nicole, then he just became the most adorable guy.
The going back and forth was very necessary and I got used to it. It kept you up to date with all the characters at once.

Every time I thought I solved the puzzle, some surprise changes everything.. It is full of unexpected surprises and twists and turns. I can't say enough about this book.. I have finished it and am still thinking about it.. It is from the few books that linger with me even after I finished reading it..

The writing was incredible. This is the first time for me reading for this author and it will surely be the beginning :) I just love her style.

I loved the cover too, it is very expressive!!

It has become one of the favorites for this year!! I'm sure it will be on the top of the bestseller list in 2011.

Broken Boundaries by Evangeline Anderson

Broken Boundaries by Evangeline Anderson

Year Published: 2009

My  Rating: 5 stars

163 pages

This ebook was recommended to me by Nene from the M/M Romance group in Goodreads for the Quarterly Gang Bang Challenge.

This is one of the hardest reviews that I remember writing. The reason being I so much enjoyed this book and lived with the characters, it felt so alive and I kept going back to remember some scenes or quotes from the book.
It was so endearing and touching on so many levels. It was so hard for me to start another book after it and get into the feel again. It just drained me emotionally but in a very good way!

If there was a rating higher than 5 out of 5 stars I would have given this book. I could not recommend it enough for those M/M romance fans. Specially with the themes of Gay For you, Friends to Lovers, and Virgins.

All Chaz ever wanted to be was a Needle Gunner, since he has natural instincts and perfect reflexes.
So when he starts in the Lunar Academy of Excellence he is partnered with a Needle Pilot called Ferron, who just lost his partner a couple of months ago.
Now he is in for a real surprise, since Needle partners not only share there lives but also their skin. He discovers that to fly the Needle in the best manner and to have the perfect reflexes partners have to be really close to each other, and I mean really close.. Inside to be specific :)

All this to get ready for any invasion from the Lobster like aliens that could attack the Earth. So these heroes risk their lives and skin to help keep everyone safe on Earth.

So for Ferron to ready Chaz for this event, he slowly but surely tries to have Chaz relax with being in close proximity with him, specially that they share the same sleeping quarters and same bathroom.

It was not easy for Chaz since he was straight, or thought he was. even with a girlfriend back home. So he had to come to terms with his inner feelings and try to accept who he truly is.

I can't recommend it enough for M/M fans!!

Note: I loved the cover of the book, but it's quite revealing for me to put on my blog so I apologise :)

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:
"In order to make it work, you're going t o have to listen to orders and do what I say. Inside the Needle, the pilot outranks the gunner every time. And our lives may depend on how close we and and how quickly you follow my lead. Understand?"

"Chaz." Ferron lifted his chin with one finger, forcing Chaz to look up at him. "I'm sorry if my bluntness bothers you. But tell the truth..." His eyes softened and his voice dropped intimately. "Do you really hate it when I hold you down, when I force you to hold still while I touch you?"

"Spread your legs, Brighton," he said and there was a steely note of command in his voice Chaz knew he wouldn't be able to disobey, "Get ready to be fucked."

"What do you want?" Chaz asked, forcing his mouth to move. It was an effort just to get the words out.
"To take care of you," Ferron said curtly. "Like I do every night, Green Eyes."
"Not tonight." Chaz stepped into the shower, barely even wincing as the boiling water hit his flesh.

With Love by J.L. Langley

With Love (With or Without Series #1) by J.L. Langley

Year Published: 2007

My Rating: 4 stars

107 pages

This is the first book in the With or Without series.
Note: It's M/M Romance!!

This ebook was recommended to me by Ozlem from the M/M Romance group in Goodreads for the Quarterly Gang Bang Challenge.

Devlin and his best friend are transferring himself and their business to a new town, thinking of joining the local pack. But things start on the wrong foot for Devlin with the pack's Alpha, while finding his mate in the most unexpected time.
Laine is the local pack's Omega, he gets in an akward situation and gets rescued by Devlin while uncontious. When he wakes up, he is surprised to find his mate watching him.
But the local Alpha is reluctant to let Lainey go, so it's up to Devlin to fight for his mate, which could be a fight for their lives. The problem is Lainey is an accident waiting to happen and insistant to help his mate.

This was such a fun book to read, the heroes are adorable, specially Lainey with his innocence and clumsiness. It was a treat.
I gave it 4 stars although I loved the story but the writing was a bit off at times :)
I have the next two books in the series in line to be read for this challenge.

NOTE: This books has explicit gay erotic scenes so beware :)

Quotes I enjoyed from this book:
"Fuck, I don't know what's sexier, you begging or your eyes shifting."

Very fun and cute story

This ebook was recommended to me by Julia from the M/M Romance group in Goodreads for the Quarterly Gang Bang Challenge.

I thought of reading this book as the first book in the challenge since it's the shortest one, and I wanted to get a feel for this series.
I can't give any details since it was very short and I don't want to give any spoilers, but Victor and Jacob seem like likeable characters.
They go skating and seem cute together. I might start reading this series after I finish this challenge.

A cute imaginative short story that I enjoyed, but it was too short to get the feel for the characters :)

The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton

The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton

Year Published: 1995
My Rating: 5 stars
352 pages

This is the forth book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series.
Anita's got a new client asking her to look for his missing wife, he can't go to the cops because she is a werewolf and owns a butcher shop. If that is revealed she could loose her business.
So since anita is not an investigator she refers him to her friend Ronnie.

Anita soon discovers that Peggy is not to only lycanthrope missing, but seven others are too and no clue as to where they could be.

She is also called by the police to help solve a murder that looks like it could be paranormal related but in a different county.

Dating Richard now but discovers some new side to him not revealed to her before, to the joy of Jean Claude who is consistently persueing her :) How fun!! A vampire and a werewolf :D

We meet new creatures and shapeshipters.. some good and some really nasty!!
A lot of action and gore in this book, it does not disappoint. Loved it to bits :)

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:
I seemed to be speaking English, but perhaps my questions were really Swahili and I just didn't realize it. Or maybe whatever had happened was too awful for words. That happened a lot in my business.

The wind gusted cold enough to take my breath away as I neared the corner and relative safety. I wore a lot of sweaters in the winter, but tonight I'd wanted something dressier, and I was freezing my potooties off, but I was hoping that Richard would like the red blouse.

"He means that much to you?" There was surprise in his voice. Great.
"No, you mean that little." I stepped away from him, around him. Gave him my back and walked away. Let him sink his fangs into that bit of truth. Tonight, I meant every word.

"What's up, Dolph? This was supposed tobe my night off."
"Sorry the murderer didn't know that. If you're too busy, we'll muddle through without you."

In any case, Richard had given me exactly what I'd asked for: scary, intimidating shapeshipters. I wasn't used to getting exactly what I asked for. Next time I'd be more specific.

Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux

Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban & Abigail Roux

Year Published: 2008

My Rating: 4 stars

380 pages

This book was recommended to me by SJ from the M/M Romance group on Goodreads to be my July pick. Thank you SJ for this great pick!

A serial killer is loose in New York and the police can't figure a pattern. Every murder is different, the victims seem to be random, the locations, the method and even the final presentation seem different. The only thing in common is that the killer is leaving weird tokens that don't seem to explain anything.

Then the FBI sends in Special Agents Ty Grady and Zane Garrett who get partnered together for the first time while being the complete opposites of each other. Ty the streetwise wiseass and Zane the polished suit and tie kind of guy. They dislike each other from the very beginning and get on each others nerve until some disasters occur that get them closer to each other and have them open up and show their true natures.

All this while trying to figure out how to catch this elusive killer. While he seems determined to have them next on his list.

I truly enjoyed this book, the tension between them was sizzling and then the romance and emotions under the surface was just so nice to read and dive into.
It took me a while to read this book because I was on vacation and that is the least time I could read, so as soon as the vacation ended I started to speed up my pace to catch up and finish it. It was such a good book. I wish there would be a sequel to see what these guys will do next!

I do have to warn you this is a M/M romance book.

Circus Of The Damned by Laurell K. Hamilton

Circus Of The Damned by Laurell K. Hamilton

Year Published: 1995

My Rating: 5 stars

320 pages

This is the third book in the Anita Blake series.

Another murder has been commited and Anita is called again by the police to help. It seems that vampires are responsible, so who better to ask than the Master of the City, Jean-Claude, so she goes to see him in the Circus of the Damned.
She then gets into action with a huge cobra, some werewolves and ends up face to face with another master vampire who wants her as his human servant just like Jean-Claude.

The city seems to have so many masters fighting for the city and to be leader with Anita in the middle.

Even Humans First are lookin for the master of the city to get rid of him..

Battles, battles and more battles.. It it so action filled with a lot of sexual tension between Jean-Claude and his 'ma petite', with him trying to complete the process of making her his human servant.

I totally enjoyed this book and have started the forth book already..

Quotes I enjoyed from this book:
Whoever had murdered him had drained him completely. Good to the last drop? I fought the urge to smile and lost. If you spend a lot of time staring at corpses, you get a peculiar sense of humor. you have to, or you will go startk raving mad.

Visions of vampire victims danced in my head. And every one of them was partially my fault, because I was too chickenshit to go see the Master. If I could stop the killings now, with just one dead, I'd risk my soul daily. Guilt is a wonderful motivator.

"Where did you find her, Jean-Claude? The kitten has teeth."
'tell Yasmeen what the vampires call you, anita."
It sounded too much like an order, but this didn't seem the time to bitch at him. "The Executioner."
Yasmeen's eyes widened; then she smiled, flashing a lot of fang. "I thought you'd be taller."
"It disappoints me, too, sometimes," I said.

Jean-Claude's words blew through my mind like flower petals. I could even have sworn I smelled flowers. His voice had never held the scent of perfume before.

"Can the sarcasm," he said.
"Please, I always use fresh sarcasm, never canned."

But there is another kind of ghost. Psychic impressions, strong emotions, soak into the walls and floors of a building. It's like an emotional tape recorder. Sometimes with video images, sometimes just sound, sometimes just a shiver down your spine when you walk over a certain spot.

Fresh death smells like a cross between a slaughterhouse and an outhouse. shit and blood is what death smells like.

"You mean I have a sort of power over vampires, too?"
"If you could learn to harness your talents, Ms. Blake, yes, you have a certain power over all the dead, in their many guises."

"I feel like one,
Who treads alone
Some banquet hall deserted,
whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead, and all but he departed," I said.

He knelt in front of me again, but was careful not to touch me. "You desire me as a woman desires a man. Is that not better than some stranger taking you by force?"
"You didn't ask my permission for the first two marks. They weren't by choice."
"I am asking permission now. Let me share with you the third mark."

I stared at Jean-Claude still huddled on the corner of the bed. He lokked adorable, and if I'd had a gun, I'd have shot him on the spot.

"Jean-claude looked up with blood all over his face and said, 'I have not waited this long to take what I want her to give freely. It is a temptation.' Then he looked down at you, and there was something in his face, Anita. It was scary as hell. He really believes you'll come around. That you'll ... love him."

The Laughing Corpse by Laurell K. Hamilton

The Laughing Corpse by Laurell K. Hamilton

Year Published: 1995

My Rating: 5 stars

320 pages

This is the second book in the Anita Blake series.

I don't know what made me wait this long to read the second book although I totally enjoyed the first one.

Harold Gaynor offers Anita a million dollars to rais an ancient zombie, but since that means sacrificing a white goat, she declines.
Then a the most dangerous voodoo priestess offers a partnership with Anita that she also declines.
Meanwhile dead mangeled bodies are turning up everywhere, which means a serial something is out there, could it be a killer zombie? If it is who raised it and lost control?
While all this is happening Jean-Claude the gorgeous hot vampire is insistant on making Anita his human servant :D

This was an action packed that reads so fast, it's an amazing book that I enjoyed greatly!!

The third book is already ready to be read :)

You ROCK Anita!!

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:

Even teenagers with automatic pistols fear things you can't stop with bullets no matter how good a shot you are. silver plated bullets will harm a vampire, but not kill it. It will kill a lycanthrope, but not a zombie. You can hack the damn things to pieces, and the disconnected body parts will crawl after you. I've seen it. it ain't pretty. the gangs leave the Senora's turf alone. No violence. It is a place of permanent truce.

"No, Manuel does not talk to me anymore. His little wife forbids it." That last sentence was angry, bitter.
Oh, God. the most powerful voodoo priestess in the Midwest was acting like a scorned lover. Shit.

"You raise the dead, the zombie, and you do not deal in vaudun. Oh, chica, that is funny." Her voice sparkled with genuine amusement. So glad I could make her day.

The thing behind the door made a mewling sound. I couldn't tell if it was human or animal. It was bigger than a person, whatever it was. And it was dead. Very, very dead.

The smell of some expensive perfume floated around her. Powdery and fine, like talcum powder in your nose, sweet, flowery. Underneath was the stink of rotting flesh. It wrinkled my nose, caught at the back of my throut. The next time I smelled this delicate, expensive perfume, I would think of rotting flesh. Oh, well, it smelled too expensive to buy, anyway.

"Manny?" My voice was a hoarse whisper. This, for me, was worse than the zombies. The hell with strangers. This was Manny, and it couldn't be true.
"Manny?" I said it again. He wouldn't look at me. Bad sign.

"She knows nothing of the deeper magics. She cannot harm me, and she is too morally superior to commit cold-blooded murder."

"But, Anita, I already have a buyer for her."
"Oh, Jesus, you don't mean... Oh, God, a necropkiliac."

He pulled into the far lane. It seemd to be going a little faster. It slowed down as soon as we pulled in. Murphy's law of traffic.

He wasn't that tall, maybe five-eleven. His shirt was so white, it gleamed. The shirt was loose, long, full sleeves made tight at the wrist by three-buttoned cuffs. The front of the shirt had only a string to close the throat. He'd left it untied, and the white cloth framed the pale smoothness of his chest. The shirt was tucked into tight black jeans, and only that kept it from billowing around him like a cape.

Most people die and go to heaven or hell, and that's that. But a few, for whatever reason, don't work that way. Ghosts, restless spirits, violence, evil, or simple confusion; all of these can trap a spirit on earth. I'm not saying that it traps the soul. I don't believe that, but some memory of the soul, the essence, lingers.

Vampires were once ordinary human beings; zombies, too. Most lycanthropes start out human, though there are a few rare inheritd curses. All the monsters start out normal except me. Raising the dead wasn't a career choice. I didn't sit down in the guidance counselor's office one day and say, "I'd like to raise the dead for a living." No, it wasn't that neat or clean.
I have always had an affinity for the dead. Always. Not the newly dead. No, I don't mess with souls, but once the soul departs, I know it. I can feel it. Laugh all you want. It's the truth.

Most people fear the dark in a vague way. They fear what might be out there. I raise the dead. I've slain over a dozen vampires. I know what's out there in the dark. And I am terrified of it. People are supposed to fear the unknown, but ignorance is bliss when knowledge is so damn frightening.

"Anita, If you hurt me, it hurts you. I could survive the strain of your death. The question, amante de moi, is could you survive mine?"

His partner was standing on the other side of the car, leaning his arms on the roof of the car. "It's a kick to finally meet the spook squad's Executioner." He grinned as he said it.

I am an animator. I am the Executioner. But now I know I'm something else. The one thing my Grandmother Flores feared most. I am a necromancer. The dead are my speciality.

Vampire Viggo can have any woman or man he wants, since they are available all around him in his so called harem, because he is their ruler.
Now he is bored, he has been looking for centuries for his eternal soul mate and can't find her.
So when he sees Dayna, Earth daughter of Danu he knows she is the one.

As for Dayna, she is cornered and feels she will die, the only regret she has is dying a virgin.
Then she wakes up to some gorgeous guy doing some things that are totally new to her, waking a new sensation within her.

Now the beast within Viggo is threatening to overcome her, so could she tame the beast!

The best thing about this book was the cover, well and the teaser sample!

I don't remember a book I rated this badly, I feel so guilty for doing it but I have to give my honest opinion or I will lose my self respect!

The beginning was really good which was the teaser that made me buy the book, then I was shocked! since I downloaded the sampler from Amazon then bought the book!

I felt I was cheated of a good book, it just spiraled downward. I know it was supposed to be erotica, but to me it was just porn, nothing erotic about it and the beast thing was just plain annoying. She was a virgin and miraculasly she knew exactly what to do to control the beast, yeah I kinda spoiled the ending, but I think you knew it was coming :)
Plus the use of some vulgar words for my taste, for example the use of the word tw*t, which I truly dispise. And her sticking a strawberry up his ***, I can't really write the passage here but it's very disturbing. I won't be able to look at strawberries the same way again.. Traumatized for life :(

I truly apologize to the author for being this blunt, I'm sure there are some people out there who will appreaciate her work, I'm just not one of them!

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:
In the face of the most handsome male she'd ever encountered, unblinking eyes the color of purest turquoise stared down at her. Dayna's heart skipped a beat and the man's pupils dilated. Those eyes, she had seen those same eyes in her dream the night before.

Quotes I disliked from the book:
Attuned to her wakeful state he glanced up. Blood smeared around his mouth like a fruit juice stain. "Your blood is sweeter than nectar. I believe I shall enjoy yout monthly bleeding." *YUCK!!! I know he is a vampire but come on!*

"Viggo, you can't expect me to.. you have to give me time to adjust especially after ripping into me like a chimp on a coconut." She pouted, "You're not exactly tiny you know. Besides, you about flooded the bed with your... stuff."

This was a free book from Smashwords !

After much pushing and encouraging from her two best friends who she nicknames the "smutty twins", she goes to a gathering and meets a guy and hit it of.
He then texts her and calls, they go out on a date and the fun starts.
But they have agreed to have fun with no strings attached, once the night is over, she has second thoughts about the no strings theory..
Will he have the same feelings or was it a one night stand for him?

Although I have never read a book by this author before, when I found it free in Smashwords I thought I could give it a try and since I seem to be into short stories these days I felt like reading it.
I was not disappointed. It was really good. True it was short but the story was nicely done and I enjoyed the writing and the characters.
I will be looking for other books by this author.

Be warned, this is an erotica book :)

Quotes I enjoyed from the book:
We fit like the primary colors, when blended made the perfect shade.

"Tell me you want me," he demanded, yet it sounded like a subtle plea.
I expelled a deep breath. "And what if I want you. What if-" i turned my head away and he ran a knuckle across my cheek.

"What are you so afraid of? Who hurt you so much that you can't see the truth from the lies?" he asked softly.

Kathy Robert's is the owner of a barber shop called Great Headz, when her air conditioner breaks down on the hottest day imaginable, the temperature is actually 101 degrees.
So she props the shop door to get some sir flow, luckily she is down to her last customer but although the weather is so bad he is persistent on getting his haircut.
They make some small talk, she asking about his profession and he asking about the reason behind the store name *grin*
While she is reaching over him he makes a tiny move, she then asks him to leave but he is insistant in making her day hotter than it already is.

I enjoyed the book and the development of the story, although it was really short, it was really fun to read.
I will definetly look for other titles by this author.

Note: It has some erotic scenes, so readers beware *evil grin*

Cathy is obsessed with phone books, you know those huge big telephone guides? She has boxes and boxes of them.
She sits down and chooses a  book to start calling people randomly, then listening and never talking just to hear their reactions!
Well, that went on for a while till she accidentaly calls Seth. After that everything changed. He intrigues her to change her methods :)

Unique story that I really enjoyed, I wish it was longer to see what heppens next!

It had a few erotic scenes, but not too much! :P

This is a prequel to Varian Krylov's bestselling "Abduction." When I read it I didn't even know this information!
It was a book I found for free on Smashwords.

Conrad's woos a virgin and seduces her without even touching her or forcing her. Everything she does is of her own free will but he is having her come for more. An erotic short story that makes you wonder what would happen next.

Now that I know that this is a prequel, I'm interested in reading Abduction to see what happens with Conrad, since he seems hot but kinda perverted :P and I want to know what he is really up to!

Colters' Wife by Maya Banks

Colters' Wife by Maya Banks

Year Published: 2010

My Rating: 4 stars

This is a short story from the Colter Legacy series.
It should come after Colters' Woman.

I got this ebook for free from Amazon and since it was not the first book in the series and I can't read something while knowing that piece of fact, so I bought the first book in the series which is Colters' Woman.

In this book Holly is already married to the 3 colter brothers, Adam, Ethan and Ryan, and she is already pregnant with their first child.
The brothers are avoiding her intimately since they are worried about her getting hurt, but she is not to be defeated! So she goes on and tries to seduce her husbands one by one :)

This was a fun short story, takes off after the events of the first book. I have the same problem about the writing phrases being cheezy as the first book, that is why it didn't get the 5 stars although if for the story alone I would give it the 5 easily.

The book is on the erotic side with menage so if you are not into that I don't recommend it. Otherwise it was great!
Quotes I enjoyed from this book:

His green eyes flashed. "Just because you've got those two knuckleheads wrapped around your little finger doesn't mean you're going to get anywhere with me."
She arched an eyebrow. "Are you saying I don't have you wrapped around my finger?"
He scowled at her. "You know damn well I'd give you the moon if you asked."
"Then make love to me," she said softly. "I don't want the moon. I want you."
